Housing Choice Voucher Program

The NLRHA Housing Choice Voucher Program (also known as the Section 8 program) funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), provides housing assistance to extremely low and very low-income individuals, families, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. Its objective is to provide affordable, decent and safe housing for eligible families, while increasing a family’s residential mobility and choice. NLRHA, a state chartered public housing agency since 1939, now administers the second largest Section 8 Program in the state with an allocation of 1297 Housing Choice Vouchers. That number includes vouchers for disabled veterans referred through the HUD-VASH program.

Participants of Section 8 can select housing within a neighborhood of their choice from a property owner willing to participate in the program. Vouchers allow families to pay a reasonable share of their income toward rent while the program, within specific limits, makes up the difference.

Applications for the Section 8 program are taken periodically at a time determined by the Authority. The “open” period is advertised in the local newspaper two weeks prior to the acceptance of applications.
